Foster Friday

February 8, 2013

We’ve had somewhat sad news about our little old lady Patches.  She had her biopsy last week for the mammary mass, and it turned out benign, which was great, but the day after that, she pretty much stopped eating, so by Monday we were very concerned and took her back to the vet.  He was somewhat mystified by her condition, since her bloodwork showed no problems except hyperthyroid – so why isn’t a hyperthyroid cat eating a ton?  He consulted with the foster organization and they decided to do a little bit of abdominal ultrasound, to see whether there was anything else that might explain her overall situation.

The results suggested the possibility of lymphoma in her digestive tract.  Without doing exploratory surgery, which was a bad idea in such an elderly and slightly debilitated cat, there really wasn’t anything more we could do other than decide what was the right thing to do.

We decided that she’s had such a hard time that we want to give her some happy comfortable weeks or months before her life ends, so the vet gave her a shot of steroids and a shot of appetite stimulant, and sent her home with me.  We’ll keep her with us, in her own little room, as long as she wants to go on, and make her as happy as we can.  If her appetite stays good, we can keep slipping the steroids into her food, and that will sort of prop her up and make her comfortable until they can’t anymore.

About 24 hours after the shot, she was so much herself again – up and wandering around the room, purring, and EATING.  She really is a sweet thing and no trouble to have around the house.

Awwww- So sorry for the bad news, but thank heavens Patches is feeling better with the steroid treatment. I hope the meds can keep her condition stable for a long, long, long time to come. And you are wonderful for giving her a home with such love and attention!

I am sorry she is facing end of life, but she is blessed that you are willing to make it a happy time. May you have lots and lots of quality time before the end.

Patches does have amazing eyes! I’m so sorry to hear she’s on the final lap. She’s had enough to deal with as it was. I’m glad you are going to give her peace and happiness for the rest of her days. She certainly deserves a happy life, even for a little bit. Thank you for giving her that!
