Meet Patches

January 9, 2013

We unexpectedly acquired a foster cat yesterday.  I saw her on Facebook posted by the rescue that I foster for, and something about her face and her story completely overthrew my conviction that I don’t have the time to care for a foster right now.

This is her “shelter photo,” before they shaved half her body to get rid of the mats that were hurting her and making her cranky and aggressive.  You can see what a lovely cat she must have been in her younger days.

She is fourteen years old, and ostensibly was surrendered to the Baltimore animal shelter because the kids in the family became allergic to her.  Given how neglected she seems to be in terms of her cosmetic condition, I think it’s more likely that the mats made her not want to be touched and they couldn’t be bothered to help her with that.  A couple of her claws had gotten so long they’d punctured her pads, so she had surgery to fix that, and while she was under they shaved her as quickly as they could, so she really needs more grooming.  Sorry for the grainy picture, it was a little dim in the room last night.

We picked her up at BARCS last night and put her into the office where we’ve had fosters in the past.  She is extremely quiet, but is eating and drinking and sitting around.  Emmy went in and sat with her for a long time last night talking to her about school, and eventually she crept over and got on Emmy’s lap, so I hope she won’t be this sad for long.

I already have a couple of people who are interested in giving her a permanent home, so we will get her rested up and cheered up and I hope she will very soon have a happy place to spend her last years.

This just breaks my heart. I hope she will find a wonderful home soon.

Poor old girl. I hope she gets happy and healthy ASAP. I’m sure you and Emmy will see to that!
